State Library of Victoria Pictograms

The pictograms I designed for the State Library of Victoria were based on their collections by format. I chose to design maps, eresources, manuscripts, letters & diaries, books, and audiovisual material. As well as these, I chose to design general wayfinding pictograms for a café, information desk, and escalators.

My designs are quite simple, using basic shapes. Therefore, the pictograms would be easily identifiable for the everyday person, so that they have a seamless customer experience. The general rules surrounding my designs are that they are two dimensional images, have rounded edges, a consistent, thick line weight, and the use of negative space. I believe there is also consistency in the repetition of individual shapes and angles. For example, in the escalator pictograms, the curved line representing the escalator is used again in the information desk, the pen on the manuscripts, letters & diaries pictogram, books, and audiovisual material. Additionally, the figures in the wayfinding pictograms are reused and the semi circle shape of the figures’ bodies are reused in the handle of the coffee cup. In terms of the overall designs, I believe I have created a balance by filling in certain shapes, whilst leaving others with just an outline.
